Abstract
The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) was examined immunohistochemically in a total of 95 gastric carcinoma, of which 71 cases(74.7%) showed immunoreactivity with either diffusely in 44 cases(46.3%) or granularly in 27
cases(28.4%).
Fiveyear survival rates with reference to EGFR expression were as follows; 85.7% in the negatives, 69.1% in the diffuse positives and 36.0% in the granular positives. Correlation analysis revealed that proportion of signet-ring cell(p
value=0.001),
Lauren's classification(p value=0.008) and depth of tumor invasion(p value=0.037) were associated the expression of EGFR. By multivariate analysis, metastasis to regional lymph nodes, EGFR expression and depth of tumor invasion were the
significant
prognostic factors in descending order. We concluded that EGFR expression may provide a reliable prognostic information in the gastric adenocarcinoma.
